MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - 2012 has been an eventful year, locally.

From appalling crimes to landmark business announcements, there have been a lot of local headlines made in 2012, but let's take a peek at what 2013 could have in store.

The New Year will be ushered in with some big messes to clean up.

Two tornadoes struck Mobile late this month, leaving a swath of destruction but, thankfully, no deaths. We'll be watching cleanup progress and the latest efforts to repair Murphy High School.

There’s also a big mess in the City of Prichard: the status of Police Chief Jimmie Gardner.

The mayor gave him a termination letter and a judge awarded a temporary restraining order. In early January, a hearing will be held to see if the termination was lawful.

Timeline: A look back at 2012's big headlines

2012 is nearly in the rearview and, looking ahead into 2013, there will be some marquee events that will resonate for the whole region.

In February, BP is scheduled to go to court to answer for the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill. A trial is being held for claims made against BP by individuals, business owners and the Gulf States.

Also, in the next year, construction begins on the new Airbus assembly plant, which is expected to create 2,500 jobs.

Mobile will finally get its first Publix! A 45,000-square foot store is expected to open at Cottage Hill and Hillcrest Roads in summer 2013.

And another grand opening — The Gulfquest Maritime Museum! This museum, said to be unlike any other in the country, will highlight the maritime industry and officials project it will bring in 300,000 visitors a year.

There are some other stories to watch for as well: like possible changes to the Senior Bowl. CEO Phil Savage told FOX10 News he'd like to see juniors play in the game sometime in the future.

Will 2013 bring news of more revitalization downtown? What about a new cruise ship? Will that finally sail in?

Who knows?

You'll just have to watch FOX10 and log onto Fox10tv.com next year to find out.
