Residents tried to fight off home invaders, one shot

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - UPDATE: Tuesday, November 27, 2012, 4 p.m. -  The Mobile County Sheriff's office said Eric Weaver has turned himself in. They are still searching for Anthony Olender.

UPDATE: Tuesday, November 27, 2012, 12 p.m. - The Mobile County Sheriff's Office said Dominique Moore confessed to being at the scene and knowing what was going on during the home invasion at 4130 Nicholas Drive, Eight Mile. Moore was arrested and charged with first degree burglary.

Deputies are still looking for Eric Lee Weaver and Anthony Jarahn Olender in connection to the home invasion.

Monday, November 26, 2012 - Authorities said an Eight Mile woman was shot during a home invasion. One man is in custody, and sheriff's deputies are looking for three others in connection with the crime.

David Reed said he wasn't alarmed when someone knocked on his door after midnight Sunday morning.  He thought it was a neighbor seeking maintenance help. 

"It went so quick. I couldn't really tell you," Reed said.

According to reports, when Reed opened the door, two armed men wearing masks forced their way into the mobile home and demanded money, but the robbery didn't go as planned.

"Cause when he opened the door, I grabbed him and we went like this, and right back down," he said.

Reed, his wife Margaret Fairchild, and their 11-year-old granddaughter were all in the front room. 

“There was a lot of intense activity a confined space near the front door. Mr. Reed was wrestling with one of the robbers on the floor by the door. Ms. Fairchild was standing nearby, and the other gunman was just a few feet away when he shot her,” said a deputy.

Destiny Fairchild said her mother told her she didn't think the robber intended to shoot her.

"When she said, ‘Oh my God! You shot me!’ It was like he dropped the gun, and it was like he was in shock that he had actually done it. Maybe he felt remorse. I don't know, but mama said that she could tell that he didn't - that he was in shock himself that he had actually shot her," Fairchild said.

Destiny Fairchild said she's hopeful her mother will recover.

"She's in stable condition.  As far as everything goes, she's looking good. It was a clean shot through and through no internal damage so far," Fairchild said.

There are four bullet holes in the front wall.  One shot out the tire on Reed's truck.

After Fairchild was shot the robbers fled the house, and Reed said he tried to catch them.

"I jumped in my truck and went after them, but I was on a flat I couldn't catch them," He said.

Deputies were able to track one suspect to his home on Timber Creek Drive North in Axis.  After a brief standoff, 18-year-old Brandon Davis surrendered.

He's charged with assault, burglary, and a probation violation. Investigators are looking for three other suspects in the case.

"My mama and them they would have gave them the shirt off their backs.  All they had to do was ask. They didn't have to do what they done." Fairchild said.

Fairchild said her 11-year-old daughter called 911 after the shooting, and put pressure on her grandmother's wound until authorities arrived.  Family members said the little girl is the real hero in the frightening ordeal.
