MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - A veterinarian in Mobile is using World Rabies Day, which is Friday, September 28, to remind everyone that rabies is something to be aware of. But rabies is preventable.
Dr. Mike Rehm says there are 30,000 to 50,000 cases of rabies exposure in the United States. However, there were only six deaths in 2011. Dr. Rehm says that is due to the preventable measures, such as pet vaccinations and the treatment available in the United States once a human is exposed.
Dr. Rehm says the main concern for humans and their pets comes from wildlife in the area.
"In the last seven or eight months, we had an outbreak of rabies where 17 people were exposed in Baldwin County due to a rabid raccoon. So, it's something we deal with on a regular basis."
Dr. Rehm warns that while raccoons, foxes or bats may appear sickly, they can still bite you and expose you to rabies. He also says it is the law in the state of Alabama to get your pets vaccinated against rabies. Vaccinations are available at any animal clinic.
The Mobile County Health Department is holding a rabies clinic in Turnerville Saturday, September 29. Rabies shots will be available from 7 a.m. Until 12 p.m. They cost $8 per pet.
