MOBILE, Alabama (WALA) - Mobile's Police Chief says he learned of a brutality complaint from Fox Ten News. It's because of a story we broke Tuesday night at 5 p.m. A man says he was tased and his female friend beaten during an arrest last week.
As Emily Butler made her way into a Mobile County courtroom, she looked much different to family members.
"When I saw my daughter that was the first time with both eyes shut, swollen and lip busted," said Jerimiah Butler.
Ronnie Williams said Butler was beaten by Mobile police.
He said it all happened last week near Brookley Field; the pair had gone there with plans to fish.
"I could see him on top of her, hitting her," said Ronnie.
Ronnie, who is confined to a wheelchair says officers tased him too.
Mobile Police Chief Tyrone Williams said he didn't hear about the allegations until he saw our 5:00 p.m. broadcast.
Chief Williams said the incident is being investigated by Internal Affairs.
"Often times we do find ourselves where citizens and other folks are not compliant. And sometimes get these use of force type of cases," said Chief Williams.
Ronnie said he didn't come forward sooner, because he was afraid.
“I was afraid to say anything on the scene. I wanted to talk to someone in private,” Ronnie said.
Fox Ten News asked Chief Williams if he thought people were too scared to come forward.
"I hope that is not the case, I want our citizens to feel safe and comfortable and call us with issue even if it is with us," said Chief Williams.
Chief Williams was clear, if the allegations prove true, this behavior will not be tolerated.
Wedneday morning, Judge Bob Sherling told Butler the charges against her were dismissed.
Butler was charged with assault second degree, failure to obey a police officer, indecent exposure, possession of a controlled substance, and resisting arrest.
Yet, Judge Sherling’s office says that is being rectified.
Judge Sherling’s office says the arresting officer was ill and couldn’t sign the paperwork.
“He is meeting with the DA’s office now trying to get the charges reinstated,” said Judge Sherling.
Ronnie said he recorded some of the alleged incident on his cell phone, which he says was confiscated by police.
Police Chief Williams said he isn't aware of cell phone video.
