DESTIN, Fla. (WALA) - The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a woman they say left two children in her car while she went inside a Destin establishment for over an hour.

Deputies say a witness called the sheriff’s office around 3:44 a.m. Wednesday morning after finding two girls, ages 7 and 11, wandering around the parking lot at AJ’s Seafood and Oyster Bar on Harbor Boulevard.

Authorities say the girls were searching for 34-year old Melissa Ann Ammons of Montgomery, Alabama.

Deputies say Ammons left the children alone in her car while she went inside the bar to consume alcoholic beverages. She is now charged with child neglect.

Officials say when deputies got to the scene, Ammons was in her car with the two children, getting ready to leave.
