PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) - Authorities are still investigating a hit-and-run that injured an 11-year-old girl who flipped over the handlebars of her bicycle.
Virginia Walker said she got a good look at the vehicle that allegedly hit her on Friday. The Florida Highway Patrol said it's described as a white, silver or tan pickup truck with a "Go Gators" bumper sticker on the tailgate.
Since she began attending Ferry Pass Middle School, Virginia has been riding her bike from home to school.
It's something she had been looking forward to since she made it to the sixth grade.
Virginia's family said she was riding her bike to school down Parazine Street when a vehicle hit her back tire, throwing her over the handlebars onto the side of the road near the corner of Lode Star Avenue.
The middle-schooler talked about what the accident was like from her perspective.
"I felt this big push and I went flying. When I landed on the ground, I saw a car passing me and my arm started to hurt very badly," she said.
Heather Walker, Virginia's mother, said her daughter laid on the side of the road for several minutes before a passerby picked her up and took her to West Florida Hospital.
"It just breaks my heart that someone would be so heartless to not stop and check if I was okay," Virginia Walker said.
Heather Walker says Virginia loves to go outside and be active but she's been stuck inside their home with a broken wrist, plus numerous scrapes and bruises.
"Everything's running through your head and my heart just dropped," said Heather Walker, "You stay up all night and you wonder if she's okay."
Heather Walker says she also wonders about the person that left her daughter lying on the side of the road.
"How can you not stop? How can you just drive on and keep doing whatever you're doing? I hope they realize what they did and they turn themselves in," said Heather Walker.
If you have any information on the truck, contact the Florida Highway Patrol at 850-484-5000.
