PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) - The Escambia County Sheriff's Office responded to J & J Towing on Pace Boulevard to assist the Emergency Medical Service in finding a finger lost by a teen who may be charged with trying to burglarize the business.
With 15 years experience in the towing industry, Dan Abbey is no stranger to calls in the wee hours of the morning. But the J & J Towing owner said he has never received one quite like this.
Around 3:30 a.m. Thursday, Abbey got a call from the Escambia County Sheriff's Office dispatch.
"The lady said, 'I've got a weird one for you," Abbey said. "I said, 'Well, what is that?' She said, 'Well, can you go to your shop and open your shop? We need to retrieve a finger that's been cut off.' I said, 'Are you serious?' She said, 'Yes, I'm serious, and it's weird.' I said, 'Okay, well we'll be there in 15 to 20 minutes."
That's where Abbey's right hand man, Grover "Cleve" Davis came in. Ironically, he'd be helping authorities try to locate a right hand finger.
Deputies said a 15-year-old intruder severed the finger on an 8-foot, barbed wire fence while he was sneaking in the shop.
"He was jumping the fence on this side where there's no barbed wire, and that's where his finger was severed at the knuckle, trying to get in the property," Davis said.
Once the young man realized what happened, he yelled to witnesses for help. They called 911, and he was taken to the hospital with his severed digit.
"I couldn't believe somebody would lose their finger jumping a fence trying to break into a place," Davis said. "That was just crazy."
Davis believes the intruder targeted a specific part of the fence because it has a soft spot where the barbed wire here has been pushed down.
Abbey said J and J's isn’t taking the event lightly.
"We are definitely pressing charges," Davis said. "He was coming across the fence for a reason, and he needs to learn that for whatever reason it wasn't right."
Davis said he'll also be tightening up the barbed wire and pointing cameras at the shop's perimeter.
As for the intruder, Davis thinks he's learned his lesson.
