PENSACOLA, Florida (WALA) - It's been over a year since the brutal murders of Melanie and Byrd Billings.
In October, Leonard Patrick Gonzalez, Jr. was the first of the eight suspects to stand trial.
Gonzalez, Jr. was the mastermind behind the crime. During the trial, the prosecutor John Molchan made it clear Gonzalez, Jr. was a key player.
"It is the state's position that there is no doubt that Leonard Patrick Gonzalez, Jr. is the man that had his hand on the gun, his finger on the trigger, and fired the shots at Mr. And Mrs. Billings on July ninth of 2009," said Molchan.
Gonzalez, Jr. was convicted and the death penalty was recommended. The judge will decide whether to go with this, or impose a new sentence on February 17.
The suspects continue to move through the Florida courts. On Friday the court saw another guilty conviction.
Wayne Coldiron was convicted of two counts of first degree murder and one count of home invasion. He is sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for the murders and 15 years for home invasion.
According to prosecutors, there was no proof that he had prior knowledge the murders were going to happen. This is why he did not face the death penalty.
In February, Donnie Stallworth faces the same charges and the death penalty will not be sought.
The father of the mastermind will stand trial in April. Leonard Patrick Gonzalez, Sr. will be tried alongside Gary Sumner. Prosecutors say they will not seek the death penalty.
The final trial will be in May. Pamela Long Wiggins is charged with being an accessory after the fact. Investigators found the murder weapon hidden in her car. They also found the safe that was stolen during the crime buried in her backyard.
Frederick Thorton and Rakeem Florence entered a guilty plea for second degree murder in exchange for their testimony.
