Blue Angels to fly under new commander in 2013

NAS PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) - Whether they’re soaring through the skies, pulling off death-defying maneuvers for the crowds at one of their airshows or taking a lucky civilian chosen for a ride along, the Blue Angels are always an amazing example of Naval Aviation.

For the last four years, the Blues have been led by their Commanding Officer and Flight Leader Cpt. Greg McWherter.

“It didn’t really really sink in until after the show was over. When it does sink in, you kind of reflect on how great the season was,” said Cpt. McWherter.

Saturday’s Homecoming Air Show was Cpt. McWherter's last, as he stepped down Sunday at a ceremony onboard NAS Pensacola.

Taking over the Blue Angels' reigns is Cmdr. Tom Frosch, who’s been in the Navy for 20 years. Frosch was chosen to be the man responsible for leading the Blues through their maneuvers and keeping the pilots safe.

“You get butterflies like going to play that first football game when you were a kid. As a naval aviator, there is no better job out of the Navy,” Cmdr. Frosch said.

Dozens of folks turned out to witness the change of command. McWherter and Frosch said the ceremony isn’t just for the pilots, but the entire enlisted team that helps them fly.

“Every time someone sees a blue and gold jet flying around, it’s because an enlisted Sailor or Marine made that happen. I know that we choose the right people to take this team into the future and I’m excited to see that happen. I can’t wait to see the 2013 team in action,” said Cpt. McWherter.

Frosch will have his first showing with the Blues when their 2013 season begins on March 16th, 2013 at the Naval Air Facility in El Centro, California.
