PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) - Family and close friends of Sabryna Hughes held a candlelight vigil in her memory Friday at 5:30 p.m. in Avondale Park in Bellview.  Guests wrote messages to her on balloons and release them during the service.

Hughes was killed Sunday in the tragic I-75 crash, which claimed the lives of 11 victims.

Hughes' mother Celeste Knapp sat down with FOX10 News' Cory Pippin on Thursday, saying her daughter loved people, evident by how active she was in the community.  Hughes volunteered with her church and mentored young children in the Big Brothers, Big Sisters program.

“I’m just tremendously blessed to see and hear of all the stories, the encouragement," Knapp said.  "The stories that I’ve heard about Sabryna people who know her very well and people who only met her once and twice, she significantly left an impact on them and I’m honored to have such an awesome daughter."

Knapp said it was Hughes' classmates' idea to write messages on balloons and send them up to her at the conclussion of the service.

Knapp's message to her daughter said, " I love you forever Monkey Doodle (her nickname), and I'll see you soon."

Knapp said Hughes was on her way to attend a funeral with her father and stepmother.  She was only 17 years old.
