PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) - The Escambia County sheriff's office said on Wednesday night, deputies were patrolling Oakwood Terrace Apartments when two men started running.
Officials said Deputy Ryan Robinson followed after them.
Sheriff’s spokesman Matt Baxter said, "During the foot chase, one of the suspects fired a round and shot Deputy Robinson in the stomach."
At least one person witnessed the incident.
An anonymous witness said, "I seen the deputy on the ground, and the ambulance came. The cops were shining the lights on him and stuff, trying to make sure he was ok."
But authorities said thankfully, his bulletproof vest saved him.
Baxter said, "The vest actually disperses the energy. You'll get a big bruise, and some pain still, but it doesn't actually penetrate anything."
Baxter said, "These bulletproof vests are specifically designed with Kevlar to protect all of your vital organs. And deputies are required to wear this under their uniform."
Deputy Robinson was treated at a hospital and is recovering at home.
Baxter said this could've been a lot worse, comparing it to the shooting of Deputy Jeremy Cassidy, who was shot below his bulletproof vest back in 2010.
He said, "It could've been really bad. If you remember back to Deputy Cassidy, he was shot close to the same area, and he's still out."
Officials said Deputy Robinson is ok, but the suspect is still on the run and considered extremely dangerous.
A sheriff's vehicle was also stolen during the incident, and it was later recovered a few blocks away.
