ECSO: Suspects, fleeing from warrant, struck deputy

PENSACOLA, Fla (WALA) - The Escambia County Sheriff’s Office said what began with deputies serving felony warrants on State Street turned into a violent high speed chase.

Deputies say Devontae Williams, 21, hit the gas, struck Deputy Kerem Suhi and knocked him to the ground as the deputy and others were serving warrants in the area. They say Williams’ then ran over Suhi’s leg before taking off.

Deputies say the chase ended Esther Dr. when Williams lost control. The car rolled over several times.

Authorities arrested Williams and Suhi was transported to the hospital.

Deputy Matt Baxter with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office says what happened to Suhi was a scary situation for the rest of the deputies.

“It could happen to any of us and that’s what everyone thinks about. It works good because everyone bands together to make sure that deputy is taken care of,” Baxter said.

Deputy Suhi was released from the hospital and is at home recovering from his injuries.

Authorities say two other people in the car were detained but later released.

Devontae Williams is faces charges of eluding police, aggravated battery and resisting arrest. He is being held in the Escambia County Jail under no bond.
