PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) - The Escambia Sheriff’s Office said it’s teaming up with the Florida Sheriffs Task Force for the war against synthetic drugs and underage drinking.
Last week, officials across the state announced Operation Dry Spring will take place from March 4 – April 7, 2013 in conjunction with the spring break schedules of most public and private schools in Florida. On April 11, the state will reveal its results.
Right now on Pensacola Beach, ECSO deputies said they are on high alert.
“We’ll patrol the beach out here, ATV, bike patrols, and on foot a lot," said ECSO Lt. Lee Weston. "We’re just now kicking off the spring break season out here, so we’ll start beefing up our manpower as the crowds dictate to us, and just make sure everybody comes out here and has a good, safe time. We’ll be able to handle any problems that arise.”
Lt. Weston said he has seen his share of spice on the beach, but their main problem is alcohol-related dehydration.
The state reports that in 2010, more than 190,000 young people under 21 found themselves in an emergency room for injuries or conditions connected to drinking.
Weston said a “Dry Spring,” focused on counter-acting alcohol and drug use could make a difference.
“I think it’s a good initiative," Weston said. "Anytime we can get together and do something to kind of curb the youth that may be apt to go to the wrong way on some of this stuff, I think it’s a great idea. We’ll be happy to help any way we can out here.”
Spring breakers Max Hess, who is in town from Wisconsin, said he appreciates the efforts.
“The police are doing their job," Hess said. "That’s the way you have to look at it, and they want to make sure you’re safe. So I support that. I support that they’re making sure people aren’t being stupid and getting really drunk and getting behind the wheel and risking the lives of others.”
Lt. Weston said last weekend officially kicked off spring break for his department. He said since then, deputies have made about a half a dozen alcohol-related arrests.
