Man shot after driving car into house

CANTONMENT, Fla. (WALA) - Escambia County deputies said a man is shot multiple times after allegedly slamming his car into the front of a Cantonment home.

Deputies said a maroon Nissan Altima driven by 34-year-old John Godwin severely damaged the residence, after Godwin allegedly drove the vehicle into the front door during what deputies are calling a domestic issue.

"It's not very common where we work calls where a vehicle is used to enter a residence, but in situations where there is a disturbance strange things do happen," said Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Melissa Rawson.

Deputies said after the crash, Godwin went inside the home in the 900 block of Jacks Branch Road.

"When he entered the home, he was asked to leave repeatedly," Rawson said.  "The homeowner then retrieved a firearm and fired a few rounds at the suspect, which he did end up shooting the suspect."

Since deputies are calling the act self-defense, the man who shot Godwin will not face charges.

Godwin was taken to the hospital by Life-Flight.  His current condition has not been released.

Heather McKamey was inside the home when the car hit it. She said Godwin is her ex-boyfriend, and she also says she's been dealing with him for months, which led her to file for a restraining order against Godwin.

"The judge dismissed it; he didn't see that it was grounds to grant," McKamey said.  "It's really unfortunate that things like this have to happen in our community and area in order for someone to start doing something."

The Sheriff's Office said Godwin will face charges for the alleged incident.
