PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) - The Escambia County Sheriff's Office said two of their narcotics officers were involved in a shooting Thursday, Jan. 10.

Thursday, clerks and customers hunkered down in this Pensacola Exxon station off Scenic Highway learned that first hand.

“Our narcotics unit was out here in the area conducting an investigation," said sheriff's office spokesman Marc Ward.  "During that investigation, they were attempting to stop a vehicle.  As they were stopping that vehicle, two of the investigators discharged their weapons at the vehicle.”

The owner of the store said there was some broken glass and twisted metal, but no one was hit.

“We didn’t have any shooting victims," Ward said.  "The investigators are okay.  They do have two people who are detained.  One of them did suffer minor injuries from glass breakage.  One of our investigators suffered minor injuries from glass breakage."

Both men were treated at the scene; no one was transported to the hospital.

“When we’re involved in a shooting and someone is hit, Florida Department of Law Enforcement does come out and assist in the investigation," Ward said.

But in the case, however, the sheriff’s office will go it alone.

FOX10 News wanted to know if the shots fired were justified.

“Due to the nature of it, with officers involved in the shooting, plus the unit that was involved- certainly, we have to be aware of the sensitivity of the case, so it may be a little while before I can have that information for you," Ward said.

The two deputies were placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation.
