GULF BREEZE, Fla. (WALA) - Rhea Hall had known Deborah Rector for 15 years and worked right beside her at the Waffle House in Gulf Breeze.

But in March 2012, Hall lost her best friend.

"We wake up and still don't believe she's not here anymore. I get up in the morning and still expect her to come by and have coffee," said Hall.

Rector was walking home from work when she attempted to cross the busy U.S. 98. She was hit by two cars and killed.

But she wasn't the only one. Another pedestrian, Christine Nelson, was also struck and killed.

Their deaths prompted many folks, including Rector's family and friends, to speak out for changes to be made to make the road safer.

Now, the Florida Department of Transportation has installed the light.

"They've made this happen in eight months, it's been put up just like that. It lets me know they're serious, they're taking us serious and they know it's a problem," Hall said.

Officials have said they also plan to add more crosswalks and lights to the highway, starting in Navarre.

"Everybody is glad that it's there but everyone does want more done. I have noticed that since the light went up, people have gone slower," said Hall.

She said every time she passes the light she thinks of her friend.

"I feel like her death was not in vain now because something was done. Hopefully, they'll see what good this has done and they'll put them in other places where it's needed," Hall said.

The Florida Department of Transportation has stated it is open to requests for more additions.
