PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) - Officials said a Pensacola toddler is recovering after being struck by bullet fragments. They said the shot was fired at an apartment complex

Escambia County deputies were called to the Forest Creek Apartments on Patton Drive Wednesday, Novdmber 14 shortly after 5 p.m.

When they got to the complex, they said they found an injured 18-month-old girl.

Demetrius White, who lives in the area, said she was going to visit a friend in the apartment complex.

"That's a bad situation I mean, if it had to do something with a baby getting shot," said White.

Deputies said the child and a 21-year-old were hit by fragments from a shotgun blast.

They aren't sure whether the fragments came from the bullet or the floor.

The Escambia County Sheriff's Office recovered the shotgun it believed was fired.

Deputy Sheriff Matt Baxter said it is unknown right now if the gun was fired on purpose.

"They are still looking into that and reviewing the case. And last night, there was a report that we were looking for two people, but they came here on their own to talk and this is still under investigation," said Baxter.

FOX10 News tried to talk to management about the incident but was told they had no comment.

People associated with the complex said it's safe most of the time, but hearing about the shooting was nothing new.

"No, it's not uncommon when you live in the hood," said one man.

Matt Baxter said the Sheriff's Office respond to calls from this complex fairly regularly.

"It is an apartment complex, so have always had a large amount of calls because of the large amount of people," said Baxter.

Thankfully, the little girl's injuries, and the other person hit as well, are non life-threatening.
