PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) - The Pensacola Police Department has received complaints regarding fraudulent lottery and inheritance claims.
But, as someone once said: If it seems too good to be true, it probably is.
“As with other scams, people are being mailed a check and a letter promising them more money if they cash the check and send money to a specific address,” said Chief Chip W. Simmons.
Simmons said legitimate letters from companies, attorneys or other sources will not ask people to provide money before they receive winnings and/or inheritances.
Scams such as this occur throughout the year, and people need to be wary of requests for money they receive in the mail, over the internet or by telephone.
“This is especially true for people who haven’t entered a particular contest or lottery,” he added.
If someone receives such a letter, they are advised to contact the law enforcement agency within their jurisdiction.
