PSC to offer 4-year program for $10,000

PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) - Florida is already one of the more affordable states in terms of higher education, and now one of its more inexpensive schools may be getting cheaper for many students.

 Pensacola State College and 22 other Florida institutions have agreed to a challenge from Governor Rick Scott to offer a four-year degree program that would cost only $10,000.

 PSC has come up with a plan to offer its Organizational Administration degree for the reduced rate.

 For students like crime scene analyst Jason Grammer, Pensacola State’s convenient location is a big draw.  But, it’s not the biggest.

“It’s the affordability, from what you’re offered from everything you get from the college. It’s cheaper than anywhere else I’ve seen," Grammer said.

It’s so inexpensive that PSC is in the top 1 percent in affordability in the nation, according to President Ed Meadows.

“[Discounted diplomas are] going to be even more beneficial to our students in terms of leaving college with low debt or no debt," Meadows said.

This savings wouldn’t only apply to a handful of students. Organizational Administration is the largest Bachelor of Sciences major at PSC with over 150 students.

"The idea of trying to set a model for the nation in affordability in higher education is long overdue and I applaud Governor Scott for coming up with the idea," Meadows said.

Although Grammer won't be eligible for the program, he appreciates PSC trying to help his peers.

“It seems pretty good, and it seems that the college is trying to give people a step in the right direction," Grammer said.

PSC will present its idea to the board of trustees for final approval in June 2013. If approved, the college will begin offering the discounted diplomas in the fall.
