PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) - A Pensacola Police Officer is on administrative leave after a deadly shootout.

Police told FOX10 News Angela Brinson was shot near Attucks Court and Cervantes Street around 9:30 Tuesday night as two people exchanged gunfire.

“There was a whole group of us out here listening to music socializing just talking hanging out. Then, we heard some shots fired in the projects. It was like a herd of 30 or 40 of us took off running. Some people went one way some people went the other,” said Rodriges George.

Authorities said Brinson, 41, was taken to a local hospital for treatment because she was hit multiple times in the crossfire, but her condition has not been released.

Authorities said Officer Coy McKenna spotted a suspect running west on DeSoto Street and ordered him to get on the ground. According to the police report, the suspect, identified as 25-year-old Terrance Lamar Abrams, pulled a gun on Officer McKenna and the two exchanged gunfire.

McKenna hit Abrams, who later died at the hospital. Authorities said they recovered the suspect's gun at the scene.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is handling the shooting investigation. Pensacola Police Chief Chip Simmons said putting the officer on paid administrative leave and turning the case over to the FDLE is standard operating procedure.

Detectives are trying to determine if last night’s incident is related to a shooting and homicide that happened in December of 2011.
