Teen mother dies after severe beating

PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) - Pensacola police said an 18-year-old woman is dead after she became involved in a fight with several women at Morris Courts Apartments around 1 a.m. on January 21, 2012.

They said Ronkia Sconiers was then severely beaten and sent to the hospital in critical condition.

Sconiers' mother Dollie Coram said her daughter got involved to help her cousin. Coram said Sconiers was punched in the face, knocked out and kicked in the head.

Sconiers' family said she was declared brain dead and taken off life support on January 24, 2012.

"I didn't know what to think about it. I still don't know what to think. I'm in shock. I just don't understand. She was already out when she was punched in the face. They didn't have to kick her," Coram said.

Authorities said the situation began when an argument erupted at a party near the intersection of Fairfield Drive and Pace Boulevard, but they said it soon moved to Morris Courts Apartments.

Coram describes her daughter as a lively person who loved spending time with her 9-month-old son. She said Sconiers also wanted to be a hair stylist.

"I'm just looking back and thinking at the memories we have together.  We had a lot of them. She was very special to me. She was my heart," Coram said.

Coram said her daughter was not a violent person.

Authorities said they are investigating a motive for the fight. They said the women involved are in their late teens to early 20s.
