PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) - Officials at NAS Pensacola said Navy’s Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor (SFTI) program, more popularly known as TOPGUN will be operating from Naval Air Station Pensacola, January 13 through the 24. The detachment will include approximately 15 aircraft, including
the F-18 and F-16 and 140 military and civilian personnel.
Officials said while in Pensacola, SFTI aircraft and crews will be concentrating on air to air training, specifically Basic Fighter Maneuvers (dog fighting).
TOPGUN is located at Naval Air Station Fallon, Nevada with an elevation of approximately 3900 feet. During the winter, weather at Fallon is often unsupportive of air to air training.
TOPGUN looks for alternate locations with more suitable winter weather and sea level elevation to better support training.
Officials said Pensacola meets both requirements ideally with its mild weather and sea level elevation.
