The incident began Wednesday, when Flomaton police stopped a 2012 Chevy Suburban around 5 p. m.
Flomaton police and Escambia County, Florida, deputies searched the SUV.
Officials said numerous guns were found, including hundreds of rounds of ammo and several ammo clips.
Authorities said they also found tasers, handcuffs, brass knuckles, black clothing and hoodies, as well as $8,400 in $100 bills.
After discovering the weapons were legally owned, authorities said they let the men go.
Authorities said the men told them they planned to tutor students Thursday at Warrington Middle School and needed the weapons for protection.
Escambia County School Superintendent Malcolm Thomas said that’s just not possible.
“All of our tutoring is over for the year. It won’t begin again until next year. When we do have tutors, they have to be fingerprinted and background checked. We don’t just let someone come in and say, 'Hey, I’d like to tutor your student this afternoon'," said Thomas.
Escambia County Deputies identified a vehicle matching the suspicious SUV driving up New Warrington Road Thursday.
Deputies said they quickly stopped the vehicle and handed the investigation over to the ATF.
Authorities said the men told them they were with a tutoring company out of New Jersey called Innovative Educational Programs, or IEP.
"It’s my understanding they are a licensed vendor in Alabama and Mississippi, but not in Florida,” Thomas said.
Thomas said Escambia County has never worked with the company before.
He said they've made sure every school is prepared for any situation.
“I think anyone who hears this story, your alarm bells are going off. I don’t know if we’ll ever know how all the pieces fit, but there’s something going on here,” said Thomas.
The ATF said the firearms have been seized and are being checked.
Authorities said no illegal drugs were found in the vehicle.
Both men have been released without any criminal charges.
Innovative Educational Programs spoke to FOX 10 and confirmed that the two men did work for the company.
They said they have no idea what the men were doing in the area or why they had weapons, but they were not in the area to tutor any students.
The men are suspended indefinitely with an internal investigation pending.
