Two arrested on 55 counts of burglary each

Police: Men burglarized school district vehicles

PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) - Multiple charges have been filed on two Pensacola men arrested Thursday in connection with the recent burglary of an Escambia County School District vehicle compound.

Shawn M. Jenkins, 21, and Robert L. Lumzy, 18, were each charged with 55 counts of burglary, one count of grand theft and one count of vehicle theft.

"Both have been arrested before," said Detective James Gore.

The burglaries of pick-up trucks and vans were discovered around 6 a.m. Tuesday when employees arrived for work at the J.E. Hall Center.

Officials said two of the vehicles had been left unlocked. Access to the remaining vehicles was made by smashing windows or breaking locks on vehicles.

Among the items stolen from vehicles were multiple tools, three mobile phones and eight laptop computers, and a 2003 white Chevrolet Silverado pick-up truck.

"We developed a name through some fingerprint evidence recovered from one of the vehicles," said Gore.

Police released surveillance video of the incident Thursday

In the video, you can see people moving around in the background near some trucks, while it rains periodically.

"The prints were probably left after it rained. And that's a rare event, that we get prints after it rains," said Gore.

The suspects were tracked via the mobile telephones and were taken into custody.

"They were arrested at Davis Highway here in Pensacola and Fairfield Drive near the Pensacola Village Apartments at a gas station, the Shell gas station," said Gore. "Of course, they denied their involvement."

Gore said a lot of the property was recovered inside one suspect's Pensacola Village apartment. Gore also said he believes some of the stolen property was sold to other tenants.

The school district's vehicles were kept inside a fenced maintenance compound and were used to do custodial, air conditioning, plumbing, and other repairs for the school district.

Detectives continue to investigate the case and think the suspects gained access to the compound through a locked gate where the chain and lock had been cut and removed from the scene.

Police recovered several bolt cutters, but do not know if they were taken during the burglaries or if the suspect's used one to cut through a chained fence.
