Authorities consider acts a hate crime

PENSACOLA, Fla. (WALA) - University of West Florida Police are investigating two reports of nooses found on campus. The first incident was reported on Wednesday, April 11, when a noose was found hanging from a tree near Martin Hall. Another noose was found hanging Monday, April 16, from a sign near the tennis courts.

Students across the University of West Florida campus are having strong reactions to the incidents, which UWF Police are calling hate crimes.

"It was disgusting. Some people were saying it could be a joke. Well, joke or not, it's not funny," said Bernadette Verdule.

"I don't think it's acceptable," Lauren Gibson said.

"At this point in time, it shouldn't be happening. It just shouldn't happen," said Levonte Thomas.

The first incident was reported at a dorm, Martin Hall, where a student reportedly actually found the noose hanging from a tree.

The second noose was found hanging on a sign near the tennis courts.

Sophomore Rose Marshall lives in Martin Hall.

"You wouldn't think to see a noose in 2012, and if they think it's a sick joke, it’s not. For some (students), it hits home," Marshall said.

While police have increased their patrols around campus, some students said the incidents have caused them to question their own safety.

Bernadette Verdule and Keyana Robertson came from Fort Lauderdale for school.

"We were supposed to go walking that night. Now, there are no more walks at night, and we leave the library early. It's just ridiculous," said Verdule.

"It's very disrespectful. If you know history, you know what that represents. And, it's just very hurtful," Robertson said.

Marshall said she hopes whoever did it is caught, or simply stops.

"We're a diverse campus, and we accept everyone. I honestly don't believe anyone on this campus would (hang the nooses). But if so, we just need to educate everyone," said Marshall, "Because no one wants to destroy our school's reputation; it’s home. There's a lot of confusion, and fear but I feel that we'll all get over this together."

UWF Police said they also offer nighttime escorts for students.

If you know anything about the case, you can contact the University of West Florida Police .

Officials plan to hold a discussion on discrimination Wednesday, April 18 at 7 p.m. in the UWF Conference Center.
