Deputies end standoff with non-lethal force

MILTON, Fla. (WALA) - Kelly Mccully said Thursday night was an ordinary night with his fiancee on Trailer Park Circle until gunshots rang out.

"We were just sitting around, watching tv, talking with the kids. Heard a pop outside the door. Next thing I know, the police show up," said Mccully.

Santa Rosa County sheriff's deputies were called in to stop Steven Kenney, also known as Steven Fowler, who was walking down the street armed with a shotgun and firing off rounds.

"When they got there, they found the guy matching the description carrying a shotgun. When they confronted him, he ran inside his trailer and then deputies set up a perimeter," said Sgt. Scott Haines with the Santa Rosa Sheriff's Office.

McCully said authorities evacuated his family, and that's when the standoff began.

Mccully said sheriff's deputies actually used his truck as cover in case shots were fired.

"Later, the same suspect came out the back door, holding a broomstick simulating it to be a firearm," Haines said.

Deputies ordered him to drop it, and he did. Then Kenney tried to run back inside.

Haines said deputies fired non-lethal bean bags at Kenney, knocking him to the ground. They then rushed him and took him into custody.

Mccully said he's just glad deputies did what they had to do to and no one was hurt.

"Thank God. I thank God for that one, and the fact that none of my vehicles are messed up. Grateful for that one too," Mccully said.
