NAVARRE, Fla. (WALA) - Santa Rosa County Sheriff deputies are investigating a deadly shooting in Navarre.

Deputy Rich Aloy said authorities were called to the home on Larker Woods Road around 12:30 a.m. Thursday, March 7, due to a call about suspicious activity.

Deputies said shots rang out, shattering a quiet morning in the small community of Navarre and killing Philip Davenport, 31.

Tom Stout has lived down the road from Davenport's family for more than 20 years.

“I knew him when he was a small child. He would ride bicycles and skateboards up and down the street. They were a very nice family and they always said hello," Stout said.

Davenport was pronounced dead on the scene.

Stout said the noise of emergency vehicles woke him and his dogs. He said he realized what happened when he saw Davenport’s family outside.

“His mom stepped out of the car and called my name. You could see her face; she was devastated. Her face was stained with tears, and she was sobbing," Stout said. "She said, 'They killed my baby'. I just gave her a big hug."

Deputy Rich Aloy said authorities set up a perimeter and used K-9 units to comb the area.

“There’s no stone that we’ll leave unturned. It’s a very sad situation. We’re going to take a good look at it and make sure it’s investigated thoroughly,” Aloy said.

Stout said the crime has been heartbreaking.

“Im just shocked something like that would happen around here. It’s always so quiet,” Stout said.

No arrests have been made in the case. If you have any information, contact the Santa Rosa County Sheriff's Office at (850) 983-1100.
