MOBLE, Ala. - The City of Mobile officially started the holiday season Friday night with the lighting of the tree celebration.
City Council President Reggie Copeland, along with Santa Claus himself lit up the giant tree in Bienville square. Copeland spoke to the crowd about his hopes for the local economy this holiday season.
"There are a lot of construction workers here that we didn't have last year and they have to spend money in a metropolitan city, and I guess that means us, so I'm happy about that, and I'm happy for the merchants we want this to be a great season for us," Copeland said.
Business owners in the area are trying new strategies in order to get more customers in their shops during the shopping season.
Ed Edwards is a glass artist, and he said he has diversified his business in hopes that more people will come spend money in his store.
"This Christmas I've developed a lot of new products, there are some that are lower in price, there are some that are Christmas colors, and other colors. I have started co-making jewelry," Edwards said.
Edwards also said he will keep his shop open longer during the holiday season to give people more time to come in and browse his glass collection.
"It is tough times, last Christmas really was terrible. There have been hints of it getting better but hopefully that will be the case. I have a wider range of prices available for people too. I know it's tough times for everyone and want to give gifts still, but can't afford to spend so much," he said.
Edwards hopes his business plan will be a success, and if the turnout at the tree lightening is any indicator, it appears that people are excited about the holidays, and hopefully looking to purchase local goods.
