MOBILE COUNTY, Ala. (WALA) - It's see and sign time at the Mobile County Public School System. Now is the time to decide if you want your child to attend one of the system's 7 magnet schools.

We visited Clark-Shaw Magnet School this week. Students from Allentown Elementary School were also there, touring the facilities. They and students from other schools throughout the county are touring because this is a recruiting time of year for magnet schools in the Mobile County Public School System.

Marilyn Pace is the Magnet Schools Program Supervisor. She tells us "magnet schools are unique. They are schools of choice in which parents choose to send their children here because they want to do a little bit more than the bare minimum in regular schools. We offer a core class curriculum and they have wonderful test scores and are great places to go to school."

The System's magnet schools include three elementary schools: Chickasaw School of Mathematics, Old Shell Road School of Performing Arts, and Council Traditional School; three middle schools: Clark-Shaw Magnet School of Mathematics, Science and Technology, Dunbar School of Creative and Performing Arts and Phillips Preparatory School; and LeFlore Magnet High School. Tours and other informational sessions are happening now at each of the schools. If you are interested in applying for a spot in the magnet school program, Marilyn says to go to the Mobile County Public School System's website www.mcpss.com .

"On the right-hand side of the page you'll find the magnet school application for the 2012 - 2013 school year. You complete your application and then you enter the waiting pool of applicants and then we begin mailing out letters to our parents of the children who are selected for magnet schools around April 1st," explained Pace.
