MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The Bakery Cafe is a very quiet restaurant on Dauphin Street. The restaurant shuts down after lunch to prepare for dinner. Around 3:00 Monday afternoon, a man walked in saying he wanted gravy. When he was told the restaurant was closed, he began to stab himself.

"I came to see my son, he's tending bar. We had lunch," said Roy Pope.

Pope and his son Jimbo were some of the only people in the Bakery Cafe. Jimbo was working the bar, Roy had just stopped by to visit. However, the two were joined by another man.

"Some fellow walked in asking for some turkey gravy, 'kitchens closed' my son said," Pope explained.

That's when the man walked towards the restaurant's kitchen.

"He takes the knives off the block and proceeds to cut himself," said Pope.

Jason Alidor, owner of Bakery Cafe, said it was Jimbo's first day, but he handled the situation the right way.

"Jimbo tried to stop him from going to the kitchen, but once he had the knife, Jimbo called the police," Alidor said.

Alidor said the police then entered the restaurant and found the man with the knives in the kitchen. The man was taken away by ambulance. Alidor said he couldn't believe something like this would happen.

"We are surrounded by neighborhoods and families. In 15-years I've never had any problems," he said.

It is not known how many times the man stabbed himself. Mobile Police said the man, whose name hasn't been released, isn't facing any criminal charges.

The Bakery Cafe remained closed for the rest of the day. Those at the restaurant were just happy no one else was hurt.
