Defense News says Navy revising plans

MOBILE, Ala. - The U.S. Navy is revising plans for the Littoral Combat Ship, built by General Dynamics and Austal USA in Mobile as well as Lockheed-Martin.

DefenseNews.com, a website focused on breaking international and national news, says the Navy has discovered the ships aren't as adaptable as first hoped.

'The site says instead of taking just days to switch from one kind of mission to another, it's now apparent it could take weeks to prepare the LCS between missions.

It was expected that the LCS could become a kind of "Swiss army knife", replacing frigates, minesweepers and patrol boats, but DefenseNews says Pentagon reports found the ships are not equal to today's frigates or mine countermeasures ships, and are too large to operate as patrol boats.

FOX10 News contacted Austal USA for a comment on the report, but did not receive a response.
