Ocean Springs High School student killed in car accident

OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. (WALA) - The Ocean Springs Police Department have reported that Daegan L. Stallworth, 17, was pronounced dead at the scene of a car accident Sunday.

Police said two other passengers in the car, Mindy Dean, 17, and Chase Braddock, 19, were injured and are recovering at Ocean Springs Hospital from the May 13 accident.

All three teens attended Ocean Springs High School.

Police and fire crews were called to Old CCC Camp Road about 9:15 p.m. Sunday for a report of an accident about half a mile west of Riley Road.

According to the police report, the vehicle collided with a utility pole, then rolled several times and came to a rest on the driver's side.

Ocean Springs Police Lt. Flowers said  Stallworth was wearing a seat belt but his passengers were not.

The local high school was already mourning the loss of another student when this latest death happened.

"Daegon was a sophomore here at Ocean Springs High School, played high school football. Pleasant young man, great personality," said Assistant Principal Anthony Herbert.

Herbert said a couple weeks ago a senior at the school died following a seizure.

"It's been a tough couple of weeks," said Herbert."We called assemblies in both cases just to give the student time to lean on each other."

Residents on Old CCC Camp Road said they've had several accidents on the 25mph street.

At least two neighbors rushed outside following the crash. They said one passenger was ejected.

George Taylor's house is next door to where the car came to a rest.

It was the power pole in his front yard that was hit by the airborne car.

"I saw lights go flashing by, way to high. And saw her come out the sunroof," said Taylor, "The little girl had actually landed over here in the ditch and had crab-walked up onto the road backwards.  She was backing into the power lines. I crossed the power lines, sat down with her and said everything is going to be OK."

Residents on the street are now trying to get the city to improve road conditions on Old CCC Camp Road.
