GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) — The Greenwood Cemetery Association is asking families with loved ones buried at the Odd Fellows and Odd Fellows East cemeteries to donate to their upkeep.
Association treasurer Dave Becker says the amount raised from sales of lots and interment fees is $25,000 to $30,000 short of what the basic maintenance requirements are.
The Greenwood Commonwealth reports (http://bit.ly/ZE8nn8 ) that the issue was raised this past week at an association meeting.
Becker says the figures represent only the maintenance expenses not improvements such as new fencing.
Officials say cemetery records are nearly complete. They say now it is necessary to track down relatives to see if donations can be made for the perpetual upkeep of the cemeteries.
The donations will be tax deductible.
