BILOXI, Miss. (AP) - About 20 days into the 2012 Mississippi shrimp season, those in the seafood industry are calling the season average so far.

Shrimpers tell WLOX TV in Biloxi that weather conditions, primarily heavy winds, have forced many boats to remain tied at the dock.

Captain Jerry Brumbaugh and his crew spent seven days out catching shrimp inside the barrier islands. He says it was very windy onboard his boat, the Santa Maria.

Brumbaugh says the price of fuel is also taking a bite out of profits.

He says his boat burns 100 gallons a night. He says that's about $300. Brumbaugh says it his boat catches 500 pounds of shrimp, that's hardly enough for ice, groceries and labor.
