MPD: More than 1,300 citations issued over Memorial Day weekend

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - While many of you were out enjoying the three day Memorial Day weekend, the Mobile Police Department was out in force.

Officials tell FOX10 the department saw some of the highest numbers of infractions it has seen in recent checkpoints.

Whether you had a celebratory or somber Memorial Day weekend, Mobile police wanted to make sure you got to your destination safely.

Working with the state's Click it or Ticket campaign, Mobile police put stationary checkpoints and roving safety detail in place. More than 1,300 citations were issued.

Cpl. Chris Levy said, "Pretty big number of people speeding, also had 12 DUI's."

In addition to those arrests, police addressed other serious issues: 429 citations were written for speeding and 263 written for no insurance.

"It does seem like it was exceptionally high this particular time. It seems lots of people are driving around without insurance. That is a concern we definitely want to address," added Levy.

Levy said drivers with no insurance have posed major problems in the area. Police are hoping this enforcement will result in voluntary compliance.

He said, "If that won’t work, we have to issue tickets in hopes of that pushing you toward getting insurance, or proper driver's licenses so we have licensed safe drivers on the road."

Details like the ones this past weekend may also help clear up some crime. Several felony arrests were also made.

Levy said, "We did have some people who had active warrants, in particular one of which for robbery; one for possession of cocaine. Major arrests have resulted in simple traffic stops. We have cleared a number of drugs off the streets just from traffic stops we have cleared a number of felony warrants."
