MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - MOBILE, Ala. - Mobile police say they received a call about neglected animals on Chinquapin Street. When officers arrived at the home Saturday morning, they found five dogs and some chickens.
"Animal control picked up about five dogs that were clearly neglected. They picked up some chickens. There was at least one dead chicken. They saw a man run from the house, and they were not able to catch up with him," said Officer Christopher Levy with the Mobile Police department.
Officer Levy said police also found drugs and weapons, but investigators don't know if the animals were part of an illegal gambling operation.
"That's something they'll look into," Levy said.
The animals were taken to the Mobile Animal Shelter. Bishop Henry Williams is pastor of the Church of Glory and Outreach Center in the community. He said he wouldn't be surprised if it turns out the animals are linked to gambling.
"I've previously heard about previous conversations with the youth in the community that said that they were active in this, usually in the age group from like 12 to 15," Williams said.
Williams said his ministry hopes to provide a wholesome alternative for young people in the community.
"So we're working and prayerful about it to transform the community," he said.
