PENSACOLA, Fla. - A group of concerned citizens in Pensacola will hold a protest march Thursday night. They're marching from the Pensacola Police station to City Hall to stand up against the death of 17-year-old Victor Steen.
Steen was killed in an accident involving a Pensacola Police officer. A bike painted white and decorated with roses now sits at the spot where Steen was killed.
He was riding his bike down Cervantes Street when a police officer, Jerard Ard, ran over him after trying to tase him. Police say Steen fell in front of the vehicle. Ard was placed on paid administrative leave. Now he's back at the department doing desk work.
"I think the police department could have made a better decision on that," Art Rocker, with the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, said.
The Southern Christian Leadership Conference and a group of concerned citizens marched Thursday night from the police station to City Hall. They wanted answers from the city council.
"I don't think they have to rush the judgement on this until they received the Florida Department of Law Enforcement report. They need to come forward and calm the community down, give condolences," Rocker said.
Jon Parish has been organizing the protests.
"We're going to continue protesting until we know that reform has been made, and actions have been taken against Ard and the police department," Parish said.
About 100 people are expected at the protest. The Southern Christian Leadership Conference plans to speak to the governor about the situation early next week.
Police say they brought officer Ard back to work because the investigation is anticipated to take a while. He is not in uniform and won't be on patrol.
