The Mobile Area Water and Sewer System (MAWSS) responded to a sanitary sewer overflow Thursday at 651 Azalea Rd. Approximately 2,000 gallons of wastewater overflowed into Bolton Branch as a result of a blockage caused by debris and a grease blockage.

MAWSS crews have cleared the blockage and are taking steps to prevent future overflows at this location.

Dr. Bernard Eichold, Health Officer, Mobile County Health Department, advises area residents to take precautions when coming into contact with any standing water that may have accumulated as a result of the overflow.

Individuals who have come into direct contact with untreated sewage are advised to wash their hands and clothing thoroughly. Dr. Eichold also advises area residents to take precautions if using Bolton Branch for recreational purposes.

All seafood harvested in the affected area should be thoroughly cooked before consumption. Individuals should wash their hands after cleaning any fish or other seafood and also before preparing food.
