GULF BREEZE, Fla. (WALA) - The city of Gulf Breeze is hoping for a green light on their red light cameras. A house bill is currently in the works that will allow Florida cities to use cameras to enforce traffic violations. Monday night, the city is expected to discuss a resolution supporting that bill.

"I think its a good idea. There's a lot of people coming to and from, out-of-towners, people that do live here. Such a small little town, with a school right there. Maybe there won't be as many accidents and nobody will get hit," said resident Lindsey Barrett.

Gulf Breeze police have issued 6,000 citations since the cameras were installed four years ago. Traffic accidents are down 20 percent.

But not everyone is for the 'eye in the sky'. Jessie Sheets got a ticket on his way home from work.

"I didn't know I ran the light until a month later. I got a citation that said I ran the red light, and had a picture of my tag. I couldn't remember if I ran it or not, I didn't think I did," said Sheets.

Cheryl Bass also received a citation in the mail. She wasn't too happy about it, but now she thinks twice when she sees yellow.

"After that, now if I go through a yellow one, I try not to, but I'm like, 'Oh, they're going to get me this time!'" said Bass.

Several people wonder whether the cameras could make a mistake. To make sure that doesn't happen, police review every picture before they send out a citation. They say it shouldn't make a difference whether it's a police officer or a camera that catches you.
