MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The US State Department has issued travel warnings to some parts of Mexico. After two American's are killed over the weekend. Yet, travel agents say parts are still safe, and pass along some travel tips.
Bob Bender's business is to help you plan the vacation of your dreams and steer clear of potentially dangerous places.
"There are warnings right now in Mexico. Well, most of those warnings are for northern Mexico, such as Juarez who had 2,200 murders last year. And apparently a couple of drug cartels fighting over territory," said Bender.
But Bender said Cancun is a different story. The sapphire shaded surf sees countless visitors a year. Benders said you still need to exercise caution.
"Leave valuables at home, travel in groups, visit known businesses during daylight hours, carry travelers checks and register your travel plans with the state department," said Bender.
Most of the resorts are all inclusive but if you want to see some of the other sites, Bender recommends you don't travel it alone.
"If it is my children, I will hire an escort and there are lots of tour guides available to take them if you are not going to actually go with them," said Bender.
Travel experts also recommend you scan your photo identification card and passport, then email it to yourself. Just in case you lose the real thing.
These tips are to help ensure your vacation is everything you dreamed it would be.
Travel experts also recommend you visit the U.S. State Department's website and see what it has to say about your destination.
