BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. - Baldwin County property owners are breathing a collective sigh of relief. Last year, appraisals were raised, leading many people to contest the amounts. But this year, appraisals will be down eight percent.

That cheaper tax bill is something David Donnell doesn't mind hearing.

"That's a fantastic benefit, that really is, we need it," said Donnell.

He owns property near Gulf Shores. County leaders say that's where the greatest decreases will be. The tax appraisals could go down as much as 22 percent.

"You're going to see a bigger change in the Gulf area. Something that might have been $2,100 last year, may be $1,100 this year," said Donnell.

But, a lower tax bill means fewer dollars going to schools. Earlier this month, the school board had to layoff more than 150 support workers. So leaders like Spanish Fort Middle School Principal Carol Palumbo are calling on parents to help pick up the slack.

"I have a faculty and staff that has a can-do attitude, and we'll do it. But it makes it that much easier if we have parent help," said Palumbo.

But Donnell says having a lower tax bill comes with tough realities, and fewer dollars flowing to the school board is one of them.

"Everyone has to buckle up, these are bad times."

Those appraisals are scheduled to reach mailboxes by the end of the week.

Of course, those people who disagree with the amounts have to contest those within 30 days.
