DAPHNE, Ala. - Baldwin County school leaders say they have a solution to their budget problems. The short-term fix is getting millions from the county commission. The long-term fix: asking the commission to increase the sales tax.

Tuesday night, the school board approved a resolution to the county commission. School board members want commissioners to levy an extra one cent sales tax.

"The anticipated funding would be $25 million per year, and that certainly will go a long way in helping to rebuild a healthy fund balance," said Superintendent Faron Hollinger.

School board leaders are also asking for $5 million from the commission, and since this is urgent, they're asking that action be taken by New Year's Day.

Commissioner David Bishop says he understands the school board's frustration. His office has been getting calls, emails, and letters from upset parents and students. That's why he says dipping into the county's reserves is an option.

"Education in our county is of utmost importance and if we don't do something about it, we are neglecting our duty," said Bishop.

School board leaders say if both measures fail, then that spells trouble.

"We'll begin implementing those drastic measures to absorb the funding losses that we have," said Hollinger.

"It's a huge operation, but it's all of our problems," said Bishop.

Because in the end, the children could be the ones who are affected the most.

If commissioners agree to give the school board that $5 million, they will have decide if it will be a loan or grant. As for as the sales tax, commissioners have the option of allowing taxpayers to vote, which could be done in March.

The county commission will take up both issues during a work session next Tuesday in Bay Minette.
