Some little elves have been busy already this holiday season! They're making sure our local veterans have not only a happy holiday, but also a happy rest of the year! The students at Tanner Williams Elementary School are super creative and super motivated! They got to work around Veterans Day collecting supplies for Volunteers of America's brand new transitional housing facility for homeless veterans. And, the students say this project really means a lot.
Tanner Williams student Abby Loewen explains, "I have veterans in my family and i don't want to think anyone would be hungry."
Fellow student Makayla Chestang agrees, saying "the opportunity is kind great because we get to give stuff back to them, while they give stuff to us. Like they give us freedom."
Organizers say they school regularly works to help others. They say it's a great way to teach their students important life-lessons.
Teacher Sharon Powell explains, "it's our job to create opportunities for them to give back to the community. Every year we do this. We do something different and they step forward like crazy. I'm just very impressed with the the giving spirit these children have." A great lesson, for sure!
You can join in and help local veterans. It's all part of our 10 Caring Gifts Program. Working with veterans is just one way you can give back and help others this holiday season. Click here for a whole list of ideas and things you can do.
One thing the new housing facility, Eagle's Landing, needs: non-perishable food items. And, you can drop those off at local Greer's stores. Click here for a list of locations.
Thank you again to the students and staff at Tanner Williams Elementary School! And, we are going to be working with Volunteers of America throughout the holiday season. We'll continue to show you what a difference one person, one group and one good deed can make! We really hope that you will get involved!
