eBay to start robocalls

DAILY DOT COM - Just when you thought you were done with all the robocalls, with the primary and general elections out of the way, eBay gives itself permission to ring your phone whenever it wants.

The new agreement requires user consent to unlimited robocalls & text-message spam.  The company explains, it may contact you for account-related reasons, and for marketing, promotional, or other reasons that you have either previously consented to or that you may be asked to consent to in the future.

The changes were just updated, and take effect on March 26th.  In addition to the ecommerce giant essentially having free rein to spam its customers with promotions and surveys, eBay can share their contact information with affiliated companies and vendors like collection agencies.

If all of this doesn't sound too appealing to you --the good news is you can opt out.

Here's what you do:

  • Sign into your eBay account and click on the "My eBay" link
  • Go to the summary page, and scroll over the "Account" section
  • Click "Communication Preferences"
  • From there, scroll to the bottom of the page, and click "Show" under the section for "Promotions and Surveys"
  • Next, uncheck all the boxes

Incidentally, StubHub, which is owned by eBay has given itself the same liberties.

It seems eBay had a feeling the policy changes might be a bit unsettling to some of its users.  The company sent out emails to users informing them of the move:
