DAILY DOT COM - Facebook, the world's biggest online social network, is offering its users a new way to search.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg unveiled the new search feature on Tuesday, January 15. It’s called "Graph Search." The tool allows users to search their social connections for information about people, interests, photos and places.
Until now, Facebook users weren't able to search for friends who live in a certain town, or like a particular movie. With the new feature, people can search for friends who, say, live in Mobile who also like "Zero Dark Thirty".
The company says changes to privacy settings aren’t required, because users can only search for content that has already been shared with them.
Graph Search is being rolled out slowly. If you want to try it, you can join a waiting list on Facebook's web site. Speaking of its website, that’s the only place you’ll find the feature. There isn’t a mobile version; at least not yet. It will likely take years and years to index all the data on Facebook.
Though Zuckerberg stressed that "graph search" is different from traditional Web search, the expanded feature escalates an already fierce duel between Google and Facebook as they grapple for the attention of Web surfers and revenue from online advertisers.
