Libraries going mobile

DAILY DOT COM - These days if you want to check out a good book, all you have to do is pick up your cell phone. Nationwide, libraries have been finding more ways to go mobile. The move was somewhat necessary following the influx of digital lending on PC’s and e-readers.

Over the last several years, app developers have been working with libraries to enable book lovers to borrow books from their smartphones with the use of an application. Baldwin County Library Cooperative partnered with The Library Corporation to develop LS2 Mobile.

The app allows patrons and students to search participating library's catalogs, place holds/requests for materials, and check account info, including fines, holds/requests and loans. While viewing an account, patrons/borrowers can also cancel holds/requests and renew loans.

Catalogs to the following libraries in Baldwin county are available with the app:

• Bay Minette
• Daphne
• Fairhope
• Foley
• Gulf Shores
• Loxley
• Magnolia Springs
• Silverhill
• Orange Beach
• Robertsdale
• Summerdale

The LS2 is a free app available for Android or Apple phones. It functions much like the online catalog system. Once downloaded, users then simply search for the desired item. If it's available, it can be placed on hold for pick up.

In August 2010, the city of Fort Walton Beach library launched an app called Bookmyne.
