Reddit...what's that?

DAILY DOT COM -

The front page of the internet --that's the slogan for Reddit.  It’s a social news website that first hit the scene in 2005.  According to the creators, Reddit is the place for what's new and popular on the web.  However, in simpler terms it’s a platform where users can post links, pictures or texts known as "Reddits."

The way Reddit is built makes it a little different than sites like, Facebook or Twitter because the users provide all the content and decide through voting what's good.  What they like gets up- voted, what they do not, down-voted.  So, whatever the wider Reddit community likes bubbles up to the top.

The site can be used for looking up news like the Colorado movie theatre shootings , where some of the first reports of the tragedy were found.

Though, not without controversy, the site often ruffles feathers for providing a home for some pretty salacious material.  Yet many users say they see the site as an online community that brings people together by giving advice.

It certainly appears to be growing into quite the influential force online.  Stats on Reddit boast about 39 million "unique visitors" in July, 2012.
