We are officially back to school! This time of year can be a big adjustment for our kids and for us, as parents. We go from the lazy, carefree days of summer to routines, homework and alarm clocks! All of that doesn't just affect the ones directly in the classroom. It's a big responsibility for parents to make sure our children have what they need.

Paula Reese is the School Home Community Manager for the Mobile County Public School System. She's also a Mom. She's been in the education business for more than 25 years. And, she says we - parents - are key to our children's success in school.

"We have to be on top of it for our children. And, even for our high school students. Because it's very important that we start them off in an organized fashion. And, in order to start them off, parents, we have to be organized," explained Reese.

One thing to remember: we know that our kids really feed off of us. So, if we're all stressed out, that will affect them - especially in the morning before school. That's why it's important that we are organized.

  • Do as much as you can for the next day the night before.
  • Make sure you get your kids to school on time. It's so important that they start their days out right.
  • Paula also suggests making sure your kids stick to a pretty consistent bedtime and getting up time in the morning.
  • And, a consistent after-school routine, including when and where kids do their homework.
  • In school, make time to get to know your kids' teachers. Research shows that when parents are involved in their children's school, the children are more successful. And, we all want our kids to be successful!

A new school year is a big deal. And, if you have any specific questions, go ahead and call over to your child's school.
