OK Moms, listen up. We have a chance to help some other families right here in our community. And, they really need it right now. They are in what's called a homeless crisis. Did you know that thousands of children don't have any place to call home? That's true here in our area, and across the country.
Statistics show the majority of homeless are children. The Mobile County Public School System has identified more than 5,000 homeless students enrolled in classes. And, remember, that's school-age kids. It doesn't include children younger than six.
One local organization works directly with homeless families. Family Promise of Coastal Alabama is a faith-based non-profit organization that provides the only family shelter option in our area. In an average year, they provide shelter for 14 families. This year, they've already taken in their 14th family. There is a tremendous need. Executive Director Teressa Ramsey explains, "those in the downtown area that work with a lot of homeless noticed that they started coming across families that are homeless. People don't realize that so many families are homeless because they're sleeping in their cars, they're in abandoned buildings, they may be out on the streets at night. And, they're scared to death that someone is going to take their children away. So, they don't want to be known. They don't want to be visible."
Being homeless is very difficult for the entire family, children included. Experts say children are resilient, but this type of situation can affect their health, their study habits, and emotional well-being. And, here's the scary thing: we are expecting to see more families in a homeless crisis over the next year because foreclosures up and the economy still difficult for many. Statistics show many families are really only one-paycheck - or one crisis - away from being homeless. That's where Family Promise comes in. They're working to get families into permanent housing situations and giving them a stable environment in the meantime.
They're always looking for volunteers. If you'd like to get involved, click here .
