Halloween Safety

MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - The ghosts and goblins will soon be out on the town.  It's almost Halloween!  As we celebrate the day with our families, we want to make sure everyone is safe.

This is one of those tricky holidays -- at night, outside, costumes.  If we don't do it right, that could all add up to problems.  So, first things first, make sure you are aware of your surroundings when you hit the streets.  You need to know the layout of the neighborhood.  You should know the busiest areas for cars.  Drivers, remember the little ones will be out and about on Halloween.  And, Moms and Dads, make sure your trick or treaters are visible.  You might want to add a glow stick to their costumes or carry some flashlights.  When they're in their costumes, make sure they can see.  Sometimes those masks are tricky!

And, when it's all said and done, go ahead and check out the loot!  Ashley Rains with the Mobile Police Department says it's better to do that before the kids dig in.

"Anything that's partially wrapped or that's come unwrapped in your child's trick or treat bag, you can just go ahead and toss it.  They're going to get plenty of goodies.  If it looks a little bit sketchy or it's not securely wrapped, just go ahead and throw it out," explains Rains.

Remember to avoid houses that are dark.  And, if you don't want trick or treaters at your house, turn off your porch light.  If you'd rather skip going door to door, local churches and organizations often host festivals or parties.  You might want to look into that.

CAR SEAT SAFETY DAY
On another safety note:  did you know that more than 95% of children are not safe when they're riding around in cars?  That's because their car seats are not installed correctly.  That's why we are hosting another Car Seat Installation Day on Monday, October 29, 2012.  We invite you to join us here at the Fox 10 Studios.  You just pull your car into our parking lot, and licensed inspectors will check them over and fix any problems they find.  Again, that's Monday, October 29th, here at the Fox 10 Studios.  We hope to see you here!
